Fourth Six Weeks

Week One: January 3rd-6th
Monday No school
 Tuesday TAG: Discuss new books

All: Discussion Statements
     Write about one of two of the statements. Why do you feel the way you do? Give examples.
      Class Discussion

 Wednesday TAG: Small group discussions
    Talk a little about The Holocaust. Homework: take ten minutes and look at www.ushmm.org

Stnd: Class Discussion
          Pass out Story options. Read this tonight. We will be writing short stories. You don't need to use one of these.

ALL: Discuss new books

     
 Thursday TAG: Spelling Bee

Stnd: Discuss the elements of a scene. Cut them apart and organize them in your journal. Think about the relationships. Write small notes and arrows to show the relationships. You will have end up with something different.

 Friday All: Free Reading. Remember, you MUST bring a book. Read one hour per week.

TAG: Discuss Holocaust reading material. You must choose one book to read over the next month or so (IN ADDITION to Night). Choose from this list (please talk to your parents!): Book List


Week Two: January 9th-13th
Monday
    
ALL: Spelling Bee (round two) will be tomorrow. Night is on sale downstairs. It's $10. Please have this book by Tuesday, January 17th.

     TAG: Finish up Spelling Bee (round one). Add the book Shades of Gray to your optional book list. Work on Literary Terms #3 (due Friday). Begin discussing research.
     STND: Spelling Bee (round one).

                                                                                                                          
 Tuesday   All: Spelling Bee (round two)
  TAG: Depending on time: research will be assigned. If we don't have time, you can work on your terms.
   STND: Depending on time: discuss the Elements of a Scene from last week. Read a short story. Discuss.
 Wednesday

ALL: Final Round of the Spelling Bee (during advisory). Buy Night by Tuesday.
STND: Short Story brainstorming/writing
TAG: Interview with Elie Wiesel (dvd). You will have a sheet for notes.
 Thursday STND: Short Story writing.
TAG: Finish Interview. Discuss. Break into groups to begin research.
 Friday ALL: Reading Day. Be sure to have your hour done. HAVE A BOOK!

Week Three:
January 16th-20th
 Monday No School.
 Tuesday All: Computer Lab-Conventions Assessment
STND: Elie Wiesel Interview
TAG: Create a For/Against list in your journal. Discuss persuasion.              
Wednesday     ALL: Computer Lab. For everyone: More information will come for research.
     TAG: Research: group research-genocide. First we will brainstorm the questions we want answered. I've already picked your groups. Later we will divide up and teach each other. Decide which book you want to read. You'll know by Thursday if you don't get your first choice. I don't think this will happen!
      STND: Short Story Writing.

 Reading Day.            TAG: Guest Speaker.         

Week Five:
January 30th-February 3rd
 Monday final draft of research paper due.
stnd: I'll read the preface and foreword to you (Night)
tag: finish Night. The entire book is due (annotated) for Wednesday.
Group discussions will start Monday.
 Tuesday Stnd: Continue reading Night as a class. Read and annotate chapter one for Friday. Write a response (I gave you a large lined post-it) on the preface and foreword for Friday.
tag: work on Night. Organize timeline on the wall (research papers)
Wednesday
Discuss the trip for tomorrow.
Go in the hallway and read/take notes on the timeline.
Thursday Dallas Holocaust Museum Visit.                           
Friday
Discuss the museum. Thank you letter to Mrs. Furst is due Monday. The plan was to write it today but our discussions took the entire period. First period: we will write this on Monday.

Week Six: February 6th-10th
 Monday All: write thank you letter to Mrs. Furst.    Check museum packets.               
tag: group discussion #1 (preface and foreword). Class discussion.
Stnd: Check: Night (chapter one) and preface/foreword response. Discuss chapter one. Look at important passages. Chapters two and three are due Thursday (annotated). NEW: *added: vocab terms for chapters 1-3 (people haven't been marking terms in their books).
Also due Thursday.
 Tuesday TAG: First group discussion. Preface and Foreword.
         In class: Group Record of Comments        
         Homework (due Wednesday): Group Grading Sheet.
Stnd: Read Night. Answer questions.
 Wednesday All-Fantastic conversation today. I'm very impressed with everyone.
TAG: Discuss: Bystander, Upstander, and Perpetrator. Begin Propaganda.
Stnd: Discuss: Bystander, Upstander, and Perpetrator. Read.
Homework for everyone: try to stand up for someone that needs your help this week. You'll have an opportunity, just keep your eyes open.
Thursday Stnd: Discuss Chapters 1-3 and vocab terms.
         Due Monday: Terms and annotations for Chapters 4-5.
TAG: Second group discussion. Chapter 1. (possibly. need to have debrief from Tuesday-but be prepared to go).
         In class: Group Record of Comments        
         Homework (due Wednesday): Group Grading Sheet.
 Friday Free Reading.
